Review: IRON MAIDEN Continues Love Affair With Heavy Metal Fans

Dave Ferman of the Star-Telegram reviewed the IRON MAIDEN/DIO/MOTÖRHEAD tour when it came to the Smirnoff Music Centre in Dallas, Texas Wednesday night (August 13).

"I love the MAIDEN, always have," he wrote. "Virtually alone among the wave of British metal bands that emerged in the early 1980s, these guys have stayed extremely popular around the world and put out material that, while not always up to the standards of their first four studio LPs (which they released between 1980 and 1983) has a nice amount of bite and crunch.

"Live, the MAIDEN — which drew around 6,000 people to the Smirnoff Music Centre Wednesday night — is still a damn fine night out for those who love to wear black T-shirts, play air guitar, pump their fists in the air, and so on.

"Concerning the two opening acts, let me just say this: Speed-metal heroes MOTÖRHEAD having to open for way-past-his-prime RONNIE JAMES DIO is more than a bit like THE BEATLES opening for GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS, and MOTÖRHEAD getting only 35 minutes and Mr. Dio getting almost an hour only added insult to injury.

"DIO did all his hits, from 'Holy Diver' to 'Rainbow in the Dark', and sang well, but he's a capable journeyman, nothing less but also nothing more. MOTÖRHEAD, on the other hand, remains seminal: When founder/bassist/vocalist Lemmy, guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee put their heads down and punched out classics like 'Metropolis' and 'Ace of Spades', they were metal personified."
